Street Spanish 1 : The Best of Spanish Slang
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (October, 1997)
Author: David Burke
Average review score:

Not Bad Intro to Spanish Slang
I've owned and used this book for a couple of years, and while it is worth the read, if you need to buy one book of this sort I would go with "Streetwise Spanish" by Mary Gill and Brenda Wegmann. While the format of both books is surprisingly similar, I think that "Streetwise" covers more turf, and does it more entertainingly, than "Street Spanish."

El Espanol de las Calles
I've had numerous copies of the 501 Spanish Verbs, and of Street Spanish 1 & 2. (now it's time to add #3.)

I've always given them away to other Americans down there in The Jungle By The Sea. I'm ordering a fresh batch of all of them and this time nobody but me gets to use them. *smile*

It's true, you have to know the street talk or the natives go "Ay!" and the merchants charge you triple. I lived in The Jungle By The Sea for almost 4 years. Great place. Great country. Great people. The Mexicans and the Irish seem to have a special bond.

A great book on Spanish slang
Street Spanish 1 is the best book I have come across on Spanish slang. It provides a wide range of phrases and terms not generally found elsewhere, but which a native speaker would normally use when talking to friends or family, or which often crop up in movies and books. In other words, it teaches the real Spanish that is needed to promote a better understanding when conversing with or listening to native speakers.

The dialogues are made up of the most popular slang expressions that are used in various Hispanic countries, allowing their usage to be observed in context while on the facing pages an English translation is provided for easy reference.

The vocabulary section that comes at the end of every dialogue focuses on each slang term and explains its usage even further by means of additional examples, while synonyms, antonyms and variations used in different countries are included to ensure that a thorough grasp of each term is reached. To gain that extra edge, this book is highly recommended for travellers and students alike.

(Having the cassettes, which are not part of the package, would be an added bonus since you would hear the dialogues being spoken by natives of Mexico, Argentina, Peru, and Spain, providing a better feel for the language, its speech patterns and the varying pronunciations).

Read & Grow Rich: How the Hidden Power of Reading Can Make You Richer in All Areas of Your Life
Published in Paperback by International Network Training Institute, Inc. (December, 2000)
Author: Burke Hedges
Average review score:

The title is an empty promise.
I am all for reading. A reading advocate for all seasons.

But this is a short book that can't even fill its short pages with any message more specific than: Reading Is Good Not Just Because Your Teacher Said So, But Because It Will Increase Your Chances Of Success In Life.

Really! What a suprise!

If you don't already know that, you ain't gonna be reachin' for this book in the first place.

P.S. I was hoping to, and still hope to, find a book linking certain books/magazines and certain reading habits with certain successful people, so as to draw conclusions as to the best things to read and the best reading habits to have if you want to "B" "E" "Successful" (or at least to pretend you have a chance).

Good "No-Holds Barred" approach to why one needs to read
The author talks about the importance of reading, and how it differs from simply watching TV or listening to the radio. Straight forward approach, with individual human examples, of how a person's life can change for the better by reading.

There is also an interesting comparison (that may even be eye-opening) between the people who choose to read and the people who know how to read and choose not to.

Read & Grow Rich
I believe this book, as simple as it is, to be a powerful book for people who want to bring about change in their lifes. For those who say "I don't have time to read", this book tells why they must choose to have time. It's the only way to change those thoughts in your head to new and different ones. Read Mr. Burke Hedges book! It will change your thinking.

Blossom
Published in Hardcover by Random House (June, 1990)
Author: Andrew H. Vachss
Average review score:

It was OK...
In this book, Burke tries to help the nephew of a man he knew in prison. This man's nephew is accused of a sex killing. The plot takes some unlikely turns. The characters and dialogue are often stilted.

Another tour of the dark side.
Burkes travels to Indiana to help out the nephew of a prison buddy. While uncovering the truth about whether or not the boy is actually the serial killer prosecutors say he is Burke also meets and romances the beautiful Blossom and tracks down a white supremacist sniper (quite obviously modeled after an actual criminal). I found the change of scene and characters refreshing. Recommended.

Burke hits the road
Vachss takes Burke away from his crew and into the Midwest in "Bloosom," and in the process comes up with one of the best Burke novels. Some readers may miss his crew, but instead we get a lot of insight into Burke's history recounted as he strives to help out an old prison buddy. The title character is Burke's most interesting leading lady since Flood walked out of his life after the first novel. Overall, an exciting read pumped full of the philosophy of life by Burke.

Granny D: You're Never Too Old to Raise a Little Hell
Published in Paperback by Villard Books (08 April, 2003)
Authors: Doris Haddock and Dennis Burke
Average review score:

Authentic American citizen writing with authentic voice
Granny D is a patriot. Since her amazing walk across the country promoting campaign finance reform at the ripe young age of 90, she has resisted retiring on memories of her amazing feat. She continues her work to reform our government, and is still actively working to return the rule of our government back into the hands of "We the People", from the moneyed hands of "we the corporations.

But read this book even if you disagree with the goals or politics of this woman. Read this book because the spirit of an authentic American citizen shines through and because she is a terrific writer.

And please, take with a rather large grain of salt, the comments of the previous writer; one can only wonder for which corporation he/she is a paid shill for.

Hope in the age of cynicism
I confess I too was prepared to find that Granny D was, shall we say, "eccentric"... but reading Doris's book I came to know and love her. She put her very life on the line for a cause she believed in, and through her tenacity, wit and courage brought it to the national consciousness. This book is basically her travel diary and memoir. She vividly describes the incredible diversity of people she met across the country, mostly ordinary working folks who shared her sense of disenfranchisement. She relates how devoting herself passionately to a worthy cause saved her life. Her amazing speeches, transcribed in the book, are real stem-winders -- hard to believe a retired shoe-factory worker wrote them. A great and inspiring read. See also the many reviews of the hardcover edition. "Fort Worth": you slung a lot of invective but didn't mention anything about the book; have you read it?

American Gumption
Even if you believe that money has no corrupting effects on politics (much less that it does so to the point that it may subordinate national health and security to the almighty corporate interest) then you should be able to appreciate the fact that an 89 year old woman decided to walk from coast to coast in protest of what she saw as a deterioration of the American system. When Margaret Mitchell was asked what Gone with the Wind was about, she replied that it was about Gumption. I've always thought that was a great adjective for the great American novel. While the rest of us may wring our hands (and write online reviews) when faced with adversity, some people decide they have to do something and do it. That is what makes this country the best in the world and Granny D represents that most American trait-- gumption.

Cycling Health and Physiology: Using Sports Science to Improve Your Riding and Racing
Published in Paperback by Vitesse Pr (May, 1992)
Authors: Edmund R. Burke and Ed Burke
Average review score:

Great for introduction to cycling...
This book is written for the "layman" in regards to the physiology behind the sport of cycling. As someone not familiar with VO2 max or heart rate training or even different methods of training, this book is perfect.

As someone with an Exercise Physiology background, however, this book was nothing more than a reveiw of everything I have learned. I was looking for something more physiologically based.

The scene behind cycling
I read Serios Cycling from Ed Burke and realized that there is more to cycling than mere racing. Being a "new" cyclist at the age of 43 I had great difficulty to match the "older" cyclists that have been cycling competatively for the last 25 years. This book helped me to see what is all the preparation work behind the scenes. Mere fitness is not enough. You tend to hit the wall during training rides and feel confused because you are still not there. The understanding of how muscles work and what they need to continue performing at extreme levels of endurance made me to adapt my diet and pre-race preparation to ensure maximum energy, nutrition and oxygen are available to the working muscles to perform at their best. It was a complete mind change but today, less than three months since I bought this book fellow cyclist are questioning if I use steriods. They could not believe the improvement! The book is well laid out to explain the basic as well as the advanced detail of the body and mind and how to overcome those stages where you seem not to progress at all. If you are serious about cycling, get this book. You'll see what I mean!

Excellent Reference!
I will be reading this book several times. It's packed with information on how to maximize your training session, off-season training advice, nutitional info, how to cope with jet lag, ad infinitum. I recommend this book to all who take this sport seriously.

Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Published in Paperback by SAMS (14 March, 2000)
Authors: Peter Norton, Irfan Chaudhry, Thomas Burke, and Tom Burke
Average review score:

Easy to understand, but not enough content
Peter Norton is tradirionally a great "teacher". His use of everyday expressions to explain complex technological terms, his choice of illustrative examples and his selection of graphical illustrations make the book easy to understand. If you are like me, seeking to take an exam on the subject, then you will need other materials to supplement the areas that were not included in the book. The areas of Windows 2000 Server that were covered will be my only source of future reference.

Peter Norton's complete guide to MS Windows 2000 server
Peter Norton shows the way to Windows 2000 networking. I found this book easy to refer, understand the concepts and install. The fine tuning and upkeep of the server has been extensively shown.

Dependable Norton
I have normally associated Peter Norton with his computer disk utilities which have certainly saved my bacon a few times. O f late he has turned to producing high quality reference books

I was extremely impressed with this publication. Having read the companion book Windows 2000 Professional, this book follows on nicely. I guess it is not a book for beginners but it leads a lot of us lapsed network jockeys through detail we had messed with but not fully comprehended. There is a very good sections on IIS which is little understood by most and one on the Internet which everyone thinks they understand. This book gets to the heart of Internet networks, though not as comprehensively dealt with as in his Windows 2000 Professional, it concentrates on the server aspects. Security and management of the server are covered well. This is a must read for Administrators. In fact he and his co authors seems to cover everything very nicely with as much nitty gritty to make it a reference book to be held in the ready.

All in all this is a very good book for those familiar with networking but not so familiar with Windows 2000 Server. There is also enough detail for newbies to get a good understanding .

The price is very reasonable.

A Special Kind of Hero: Chris Burke's Own Story
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (November, 2001)
Authors: Jo Beth McDaniel and Chris Burke
Average review score:

A VERY SPECIAL ACTOR WITH A TALENT FOR HIMSELF!
I remember a friend who was born with down syndrome his name was Nathan Myers. He use to live in Kakabeka Falls a while back. He and I went to St. Martin's School in grade five or six I think? Anyway he kind of looked like a resemblence to TV's Chris Burke the actor who played Corky Thatcher from "Life Goes On" with the same disability that he has. But I have not read this book yet. But i'm sure it's about him and his life told in a biography with the handicap Chris Burke was born. I would like to meet him in person some day and get an autograph and be his fan. Because he reminds me a lot of my old friend Nathan. I remember watching his show long ago and it was interesting to see him play the role as a Thatcher family son with a genetic disorder and a very special person he can be in real life with lots of talent!

A Great Read
When I first began watching "Life Goes On", years ago, I was immedietly drawn in. The sheer talent and ability of Chris Burke blew me away, and this book really gives insight into his childhood and life. It really is a fantastic story that I suggest to anyone looking to read about someone with the courage and strength of the biggest tiger in the jungle, who overcomes stereotypes and boundaries. I wish there had been a little bit more about the behind the scenes of "Life Goes On" and about his musical career, but all in all, it's well worth the money.

VERY touching and heartwarming
I read this book last year in 7th grade. THe book fair came to our school and I had my money and I was read to buy something good. I went over to the shelf and as I went through the books this book caught my eye. I remembered that when I was really little we'd watch "Life Goes On" every week and I thought it was so cool for "someone like that" to be able to accomplish "all that" so I bought the book. As I read it I'd tell bits and pieces of the story ( my personal favorite is about the small pine tree growing in his...) they'd be hanging from a limb each day until I read more of the book-quarreling over who would borrow it from me first. Meanwhile all day I'd look at things from a simpler point of view thinking of how Chris might see this situation. (or one of my down-syndrome friends Sarah) It made me feel like, wow he had a HARD life and all of my formerly HUGE problems were like nothing. I could do ANYTHING it gave me a huge surge of power and confidence. It made me feel like me for the first time, making me feel like wow people care for each other, they really do. This is a VERY special book. touching deep parts of the soul unknown until this book is read, see for yourself..

How to Choose a Career Now That You're All Grown Up: Evaluating Your Interests, Abilities & Goals to Find the Career That's Right for You
Published in Paperback by Frederick Fell Publishers (February, 1997)
Author: Anna Mae Walsh Burke
Average review score:

This book is meant for someone who already has a career.
As a soon to be graduating graduate student I found this book to be interesting and relevant but not of much use to someone who has never held an actual career such as myself. I could see how Burke was very thorough in the processes she came up with to assist someone with trying to choose a career but these processes were oriented to people who had careers and either lost their jobs or are unsatisfied with them. Burke especially oriented her writing toward women which is not of much help to a man. If you are a graduate or undergraduate student about to enter the work force and you have not yet held what you would consider a career position than this book is not for you. I'm sure there are books that cover this same subject and are more directed to the less experienced career searcher.

A must read for those changing careers.
Dr. Anna Mae Walsh Burke has released a book called How To Choose A Career Now That You're All Grown Up. The book is chock full of relavent information regarding choosing a career or how to change the career you currently have for a better one. Included in this book are chapters on self evaluation, resumes, interveiws, communication skills and going back to school. If you never read another book about changing careers, read this one. I found it to be written in a style that was easy to understand, not a lot of technical jargon, and I found it to be very informative. This book focuses upon you the person and asks you to evaluate your hopes, wishes and dreams in order to provide yourself with some job satisfaction. In an age where down-sizing is heard everyday, this book is a must.

changing careers
I believe that this book would be much more helpful to someone who is in a later stage of life - someone who has had at least one career and has already started a family. The book is well-written but seems to be geared towards those who are looking to change careers and have family responsibilities... that must be reckoned with in the process.

The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook: More of Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes for Fighting Cancer and Heart Disease
Published in Hardcover by CaP CURE (Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate) (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Beth Ginsberg, Michael Milken, Mike Milken, Dean Ornish, Burke/Triolo, Gary Moss, Susan Stuck, and Martha Stewart
Average review score:

Do not waste your money
The recipes are time intensive and many are tasteless. Health food does not deservice the bad rap.

Allergies Lead Me to Soy
At the recommendation of my grandmother, I purchased this book for help in preparing recipes prepared with soy. I was diagnosed with many allergies and I can no longer eat dairy products, corn, mushrooms, etc. (that's only the beginning, the list goes on!). I knew about tofu but I didn't know what to do with it. Using this book as a guide, I prepared a spinach lasagne following the ingredience for spinach ravoli (pg. 35). It was delicious, if I don't say so myself! I would definitely recommend this cookbook. I like using it as a guide to help with new ideas in food preparation. Bona Petite!

Food-Snob Friends
I loved this book. I've been a vegetarian for years, and have had to live with the scorn of my food-snob friends, many of whom wouldn't come to my house for dinner parties. So I cooked a feast of Ginsberg's recipes and impressed them all-finally. The Chinese food is especially tasty, although the biscotti was terrific. I brought it to work and everyone ate it up.
